## About

Box's hosted remote MCP server lets AI agents search files and folders, read content, manage metadata, upload and move files, and use Box AI for Q&A and extraction. It uses OAuth and must be enabled by a Box admin. A self-hosted server also exists but is now labeled legacy.

## Install

1. **Connect it in ChatGPT** Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT (Settings → Security and login), open Plugins, select + and paste https://mcp.box.com as the MCP server URL, then sign in with OAuth. Add it to a chat from the composer's tools menu.

2. **Or add it to Codex or the API**

   Codex CLI:

   ```bash
   codex mcp add box --url https://mcp.box.com
   codex mcp login box
   ```

   config.toml:

   ```toml
   [mcp_servers.box]
   url = "https://mcp.box.com"
   ```

   Responses API:

   ```python
   import os
   from openai import OpenAI
   client = OpenAI()
   response = client.responses.create(
       model="gpt-6-astra",
       tools=[{
           "type": "mcp",
           "server_label": "box",
           "server_url": "https://mcp.box.com",
           "authorization": os.environ["BOX_API_KEY"],
           "require_approval": "never",
       }],
       input="Find the latest signed MSA in Box",
   )
   print(response.output_text)
   ```
